Add a little pizzazz to your modern decor with the sleek and modern Verve Ceiling Fan by Craftmade Fans. With its long and ovular shape and flat blades this contemporary style ceiling fan stands out because it doesn’t look like any other modern fan design out there.  In a time where I am starting to get annoyed with how frustratingly similar many modern fans look to one another, the Verve Ceiling Fan is a refreshingly different breath of fresh air.

Simply designed and streamlined, this true stainless steel fan looks fantastic flushmounted to the ceiling but it looks great ball mounted with a downrod as well if you have a high or angled ceiling. Both mounting systems are included in each package but I must say that I prefer it mounted flush to the ceiling because it looks like one solid unit. It has a 6″ downrod included but with its tall, narrow 7.5″ motor diameter works well in a small space with tall ceilings like a foyer or stairwell.

Not that you can notice it while the fan is running but the blades have a very nice shape that flairs out slightly towards the ends. The flat bamboo blades come in a choice of the walnut finish blades shown above or in a natural bamboo finish which is lighter in color. It has an integrated mini can light on the with a dimmable halogen bulb that can put out a little light or a lot, depending on your need.

Overall, this is a well-built and solidly constructed fan that is extremely steady, stable and quiet when it runs. Craftmade Fans tend to be overbuilt so they last and the Verve Ceiling Fan is no different. The 42″ blades move a lot of air and there are 6 variable speeds to choose from so you can have anything from a gentle breeze to a stiff wind if you would like. It is still pretty energy efficient though with a 2nd generation motor that is much more energy efficient than in the past.

I hate buying a fan and then having to buy the wall unit separately, not to mention if you want a remote control. Each package includes both a DC remote and wall control so there is no added expenses. The modern streamlined Verve Ceiling Fan is pretty reasonably priced at $304.20 and is in stock at Zap Lighting and ready to ship in just a few days so if you are looking for a contemporary ceiling fan that doesn’t look just like all the rest, this might be a good choice.

Tucker Double Drum Pendant

Nothing is more representative of that retro modern lighting style than a good old fashion drum shade. Whether it is on a table lamp or in this case a pendant lamp suspended from the ceiling, the drum shade has a certain mid-century appeal that just screams vintage.  Whether it is a single short drum shade, a double drum of varying diameter or a tall narrow diameter drum shade, they always give a room a quaint and homey feeling that I love.

Cooper Hanging Drum PendantThat is why I was so excited when Inhabit Living introduced their new line of drum shade pendant lamps. Inhabit is known for cool contemporary home decor products like funky stretched canvas wall decor and exciting throw pillow with big bold patterns and a great modern color palette. They are an extremely eco-friendly company that uses environmentally friendly inks and all of their fabrics are made from 100% certified PET polyester made from recycled plastic bottles.

In the past, I have admired their Buildby Table Lamps so I was happy to hear they had expanded their line to include hanging drum shade pendants. Inhabit definitely did not disappoint. They come in a great range of sizes and styles that suit any need and of course, each style comes in a huge array of fun, wacky, traditional or mod fabric styles.

The pendants range in size from the 8″x18″ Cooper Pendant Lamp, perfect for over a bar or in a bathroom, to the 24″ x 14″ Hudson Double Pendant Lamp that fits nicely over a dining room table. They mount to the ceiling from a 6″ brushed nickel canopy and are suspended from a 5′ clear braided cord. In keeping with Inhabit’s eco-friendly attitude, they are made to accommodate a 26 watt compact fluorescent bulb.

X-Club Wall Light by LZF

The X-Club Wall Light by LZF in an awesome contemporary wall sconce that makes an interesting statement in any modern home. This uniquely x-shaped wall sconce was designed by Burkhard Dämmer a German designer who has designed several fixtures for LZF Lighting. Other than their unusual shape, what makes Dämmer’s lighting designs so interesting is the shade material he used. Although they may resemble the spun polyurethane used in many modern lights, the material is actually a very thin, translucent veneer of natural wood. Not only do they create warm glow but the woods natural grain is visible in the veneer shade. The side of the X-Club Wall Light >>

VIP Chair by Moooi

The VIP Chair by Moooi was designed for the WORLD EXPO 2000 by Marcel Wanders, one of the designers that founded this innovative and extreme modern design company. Like most of the furniture and lighting from this Dutch design firm, it reflects the daring,  almost  playful sensibility of the company. To me, many of the undeniably cool products they make border on a parody of the exaggerated self-importance that some modern furniture companies and designers wrap themselves in. The VIP Chair is no different, it has a playfully practical design that works equally well as a dining chair, side chair or accent chair. The foam covered steel >>

Mod Diner Booths from the 1970s

When I was a kid growing up in the late 60′s and early 70′s , the classic booth was an American dining standard whether it was in a roadside diner, old-time truck stop or the local greasy spoon café. Don’t you wish you could capture that mod, retro look of a 70′s diner in your own kitchen or home? But where do you go to buy a classic retro booth? Much less a cool retro style booth that looks like it was snatched right out of your fondest 1970′s memories. Well, the folks at Retro Planet are offering this cool and nifty kitchen booth >>

Reproduction Swan Chair By Arne Jacobsen

Like many people, my taste in modern furniture design often far outruns my actual furniture budget. My problem is that I have a love for the classics of modern furniture. I love those iconic designs like the ball chair, the Womb Lounge Chair and in this case the Swan Chair designed by Arne Jacobson. Jacobson was a was a Danish architect and designer who was a firm believer in Functionalism both in architecture and in furniture design. Although this belief puts function before aesthetics, Jacobson managed to design some of the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing furniture in modern design including the Egg Chair, the Ant Chair and the Series 7 Chairs.
