I have been seeing a lot of these lately. It is an Artichoke Lamp originally designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958. It’s right up there with the Sputnik Lamp and the Bubble Lamp when you talk quintessential retro, 1950s style lighting. Fantastic overhead lighting, the chrome diffusers help to reflect the light evenly and steel fins allow you to further focus the light.
Often referred to as the PH Artichoke originally came in brushed stainless steel, copper or white. Sizes vary up to extremely large versions lit with metal halide bulbs and weighing so much the stainless steel aircraft cables are needed to support them.
Cheap imitations are flooding the market with cheap knock-offs made of aluminium or even plastic, but none of them seem to get it right somehow. Here is a video from Manhattan Home Design, one of the few companies that use all the original materials and specifications to get it right. Check it out.
