Each piece is hand-carved from a solid piece of kiln-dried, sustainable monkey pod wood. Skilled craftsmen from the Chiang Mai area in northern Thailand create these one-of-a-kind pieces with the simplest of tools. Samanea saman's (aka Rain Tree, Acacia, Monkey Pod, etc.) wood color ranges from light reddish beiges to dark reddish browns. Due to humidity, the wood ages in front of your eyes as small cracks appear in the grain over time. It's a little piece of life transported straight into your home. Direct Sunlight can cause more checking (cracking) on the ends, but simply rub in a wood preservative or was to seal again and enjoy the beauty of the Monkey Pod wood. -Due to the nature of this product, slight variations will occur. the hocker was designed for vitra by herzog & de meuron in 2005. this piece of furniture is both a seat and an architectural sculpture. it derives its form through a process of adapting a basic geometric shape in three steps; with each step, the object loses some of its material substance while its formal complexity increases. the hocker starts as a wooden block of birch made of multiple laminated layers which is turned on a lathe to create a rounded profile. then another slightly asymmetrical profile is cut out, and finally a flat depression is carved into the seat and vertical surfaces. the design of the hocker represents a meeting of three different circular movements. this product's intuitive and natural form evolved out of a conceptual design process and represents important aspects of herzog & de meuron's work. the hocker is part of a series of objects and installations that accompany the architectural design efforts of herzog & de meuron as independent projects. dimensions : 15.5"w x 16.5"h x 11.75"d
