The Artek Beehive Lamp!
The A331 Suspension Lamp by Artek may not have the most descriptive names in the world, but I will give you some descriptive words for it; retro, modern, funky, mid-century…um…beehive. Ok, I am out but you get the idea. This is one of the many cool throwback-style retro lamps made by Artek that provide a certain look that you just can’t get from more contemporary lighting. Sure this interesting stack of white aluminum rings may not be for every decor, but there is always that one spot, that one home, that one breakfast nook sporting a Saarinen designed Tulip Dining Set that looks just perfect with one of these funky suspension lamps hanging over it.
With your choice of incandescent or fluorescent bulbs it offers the perfect amount of downlighting with just the right amount of indirect glow to give a very warm and pleasing light. Although the outside fins are always made in white aluminum, the saw-tooth rings that help diffuse the light escaping from the sides of this suspension lamp come in three finished. Often called the Beehive Lamp, the A331 Suspension Lamp was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1953 for use in the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. Aalto was actually one of the founding members of Artek back in 1935 along with his wife Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. As a company, they continue to push the boundries of modern lighting and furniture design over 75 years later.
